Didn’t I threaten my readership that the arrival of my Westone Spectrum FX would lead to playing some Ratt?
After playing PRSi and Les Pauls for the past few weeks, the Spectrum turned out to be a little fussy for me when it came to getting tone out of it. I think it needs a fret level; a couple notes choked off for me when I tried to bend down below the 15th fret which kind of freaked me out as I was playing.
Still. Top notch fun, and the rear UBC humbucker has the capability to scream a bit.
The amplifier settings on my MESA Maverick were exactly the same as they were for “The Rover”, by the way. Even I, with my tin ear, can hear a lot of difference between the Westone and the PRS.

Being in the market for a replacement for my mid 80’s aria pro 2 that has served me very well for too many years, I have been looking over the various PRS available. Aside from the obvious differences in the construction and materials quality, how do find the difference in tone between models? I have play a couple of very expensive custom guitars that looked amazing, but sounded awful…i haven’t jammed with live humans in a long time and the electronic drums must be a real savior to maintaining your hearing. I remember way to many sessions where my ears were ringing for days trying to be heard over our maniac drummer.
If you like, I’ll shoot you an email — I’ve owned 14 different models of US-made PRSi now and I definitely have some opinions, to put it mildly. 🙂
The V-Drums are the best $999 I ever spent. They have mesh heads so the drummers don’t get too tired. They don’t sound or play like real drums but on the other hand they let us play past midnight during the week without hearing from the police.
Drop me a line. I look forward to hearing some opinions on the PRS from someone who plays them.
Wait…. Smoke machine? SWEET! Where’d that come from?
