So the fellow pictured above just rode a balloon off the planet then broke the sound barrier with his own body on the way back to ground. Serious business. Given money, influence, and intelligence, this fellow did something that most people would be too stupid, too timid, or too closed-minded to attempt. He also managed to make Felix Baumgartner look like a bit of a pansy.
With that said, if you want to appear “dangerous” and “edgy” to women, getting a couple cheap tattoos is probably more effective than planning and executing one of the most fascinating feats in the history of humanity. Just a thought.

“if you want to appear “dangerous” and “edgy” to women, getting a couple cheap tattoos”
LOL well said, tattoos have replaced smoking as the more harmless way to look cool by saying “fuck you!” to the future.
Except there is a law of diminishing returns when it comes to tattoos given that so many people have them these dayss. If you want to be edgy with tattoos now, you really need to do a sleeve at least. That late 90s tribal armband just ain’t gonna cut it anymore.
Yep… pretty soon every hipster is going to need at least an ‘ironic’ Charles Manson swastika forehead tattoo just to get noticed. Its going to be a pretty amusing future that is for sure- an entire generation of senior citizens comprised of tatted up formerly aspiring DJ’s…
+1. Guys with tattoos all over their arms used to make me nervous. Now they just make me coffee.
He also participated in two conference calls on the way down. What a guy!
Ignoring biology and eliminating several million years of developed instinct toward having and raising children “goes a long way toward reducing the drag that makes many women cut short their CS careers.”
There, now the quote ain’t quite so pansy-assed.
Also, anyone his age and with his apparent disposable income doesn’t need to appear edgy and dangerous. What he needs is to pay rent on several very nice condo’s and set up several college age women in a style they want, then visit weekly as needed. It’s a bit more dignified than cruising bars.
I especially enjoyed the obvious superiority of Alan’s ascent rig compared to Baumgartner’s capsule + partial pressure suit attempt. The lower weight of the open suspension design shaved tons of mass from the gear, allowing for much greater buoyancy at the edge of space which is what added that additional mile and a half to the prior record. This was more like Cheryl Stearns’ design, which would have used an open gondola and full pressure gear for the ascent.
Yes, I was rooting for Stearns over Baumgartner when I first learned of the competing attempts, but the latter was the one who got Red Bull to spend cubic dollars on his project, while Stearns quietly tried to convince the rest of the world to back her.
I’m certain this particular record will stand much longer, as the maximum altitude achievable through such means is limited by how much mass you can remove from the entire rig and still maintain a semblance of safety.
Reg; “if you want to appear “dangerous” and “edgy”……. Really!?
What are we . . . FOURTEEN!
What secure adult male thinks he has to appear “dangerous” and edgy”.
Instead of childish tats, do something, make something, take a position on something.
While visiting a friend with another friend in a town fifty miles South of where we lived, we met some gals in a bar, my friend invited one of them to come up for a visit. She took him up on his offer, when she arrived the next weekend, my room mate(the other friend) was ‘busy’ and away for the day, I was making Black Berry pies. I felt bad for her and took her for an airplane ride over the area and city, then took her for a sail on the bay. Back to my place I made her a nice little French dish and sides, checked her oil level and tire pressure, gave her a pie to take home and sent her on her way.
Since I had a steady girl friend we just became close friends from that weekend on, though, she/we would have liked more. Later, a friend of hers told me that she was really impressed by me, not because I took her for an airplane ride and sailing, and drove her around town in my new Lotus Europa, but, because I baked a pies and cooked for her. I still don’t have a tat, but I do things, make things, and bake pies, and doing things, making something, still attracts and impresses women… of all ages.
Well, my son just showed up, we are going to work on the kayaks we are building and then go play disc golf at a new course we found thirty miles away, then, maybe, make a few pies or a casserole. I got his mother because I designed and built houses, built airplanes, boats, furniture, hot rods, and race cars . . . and baked pies. No ‘dangerous and edgy’ tats required.
Women always tell the truth about what attracts them. If you were broke, boring, and baked pies and cooked for her, she wouldn’t have been attracted.
