It keeps coming up for auction. What’s the matter with this Cutlass?
I wrote about it last year but Jalopnik found it again on eBay this year. It sold for $6,336, which is almost the number of the beast, right? I’ll remain fascinated by the aerobacks until the day I die or until the day I get drunk enough to buy one off eBay in the dead of night.

Maybe the original buyer couldn’t drive stick.
Alright I give up, Ive tried to look at it and find something to love but I’m coming up short… and don’t get me wrong I love great moments in bold experimental American design (you are talking to a ’71 Buick Riv boat-tail owner), but what does the Aeromax do for you here? Is it the peak-malaiseness of it (it sort of looks like a sports car made by the Wagon Queen Family Truckster company)? Or was this a generational thing, did any little boys ever drool over this one or something?
Marc - you’re not missing anything - this was at best an embarrassment and at worst completely forgotten back in the day. I was starting high school in 1980 and cars like that were a punishment. Anybody who was a car guy at that impressionable age was into a) ANYTHING from the 1960’s, b) 4WD trucks, c) Mustangs, and d) anything from the 1960’s. One of my best friends got a brand new 1984 Trans Am and we routinely embarrassed him with our Chargers, Camaros, etc. that were easily 15 to 20 years old. The only thing out of that time period worth mentioning was the Gran National.
Aerobacks. Fastbacks. Will always appeal to me unless they are like that Honda styling abortion, what did they call that thing? Nice dash, though.
I bought a new X11, liked the envelope and the hatch, but it ruined me on FWD… forever!
I blame my love of hatchbacks on my father’s yellow Datsun B210 .
I started driving in 1985, and I was saddled with my Mom’s old 1978 Cutlass Salon. It was a camel tan 2-door with a camel tan bench seat vinyl interior, 260 V8 and THM200 automatic transmission. Its only sporting pretension was the set of color-matched stamped-steel rally wheels. That sucker had the weight of a big-block with the power of a V6. I hated that car.
Listen to you, man. You had RALLY WHEELS and you’re still complaining?
It became a bit more tolerable when I added whitewall Pirelli P77s, removed the cat and installed a cassette stereo with 4 speakers! In hindsight, maybe it wasn’t tooooo bad.
I posted that car on The Brougham Society a couple months back. It just won’t sell! Odd.
I guess we’ll have to see if it REALLY sold or if the bidder backs out. I kinda like these, but I prefer the Olds to the Buick.
Could be that “whorehouse red” interior that’s holding it back. Or the fact that this is about the height of malaise era crap.
Damn ugly car!!
Interesting article at TTAC though, makes sense
Does it weigh much less than the coupe?
You could put a wing on it & race it at lemons
I vaguely recall my father fixing up one of these in the early eighties. I don’t think I ever rode in it. All I remember is that it had a manual and a V8, along with a shiny new dark brown paint job that looked pretty nice to me. I can remember the disappointment in the air when it was finally sold, as he made little to no profit on the project.
