Bark and I are touring around at NCM here behind some fellow in a Trans Am, and…
Turns out he was a really cool guy with a really cool car — look at him pull me down the back straight. So I sent him the video. Can you, armchair viewers of the Internet, tell me what he did wrong?

Braking and steering at the same time. And/or giving it more steering input when he started to lose it.
I don’t know but I’m looking forward to learning by reading the comments…..

That dude was driving his mirrors… Big time.
My guess: Too much trail braking unloaded the rear tires to the point of causing oversteer and a spin.
Driving a live axle car to a race track.
Silly billy was trail breaking which lead to understeer hen he over corrected and spun.
It’s hard to tell from the video, but it looks like towards the end he spun off the track.
Thank you, I will be here all week, try the veal and remember to tip your servers.
Got behind in his steering:)
Too late on the brakes, missed his turn in due to wrong track position.
Not that I’VE ever done anything like that.
He got on the same track with you two.
You had the arrow taped to the nose again?
He looked like he was on his brakes way too late and midcorner. (Thus transferring the weight from the rear of the car to the front allowing it lose grip and swing around)
late and hard on the brakes /while looking in the mirror/race it like you stole it

- Too much brake.
- Trailbraking like crazy.
- Dollars to donuts he sneaked a peek in his mirror *as he was trailbraking,* hence the spin.
Trail braking at the apex, perhaps beyond, instead of before apex, followed by a failure to aggressively steer into the slide to prevent further tail swapping?
Net effect, suddenly going from not turning enough into the exit line, to suddenly getting the nose pointed sideways, me thinks.
But I do not have enough experience to say so with authority. Though I do feel that if he was coincidentally looking into his rear views he might have been OK, but it seems like he may have hypnotized himself for a split second, probably right at the instant or instants before the apex when he should have completed enough trail breaking to have scrubbed off a bit more speed and to have begun climbing around and out of the turn. Instead, he began trail braking aggressively, too late in the turn, then turned his wheel the wrong way as he became increasingly bollocksed up in his line.
It looks like he stomped on the throttle while the rear was already near the limit and spun himself out with power oversteer. He was probably trying too hard to stay ahead.
My buddy did that in his G35 last year - at much higher speed - trying to keep an R34 GT-R from catching him. He’s never been a fan of squeezing the throttle and didn’t expect that his big sedan could break those 255s loose in third gear. It was the last session of the first day he had it on track and he had been going easy on it up until that point to preserve his brand new Pilot all-seasons. That spin probably took more life out of those tires than the previous hour of track driving.

You can be quick with the throttle, but you’ve got to be gentle at the same time.
You sure were happy about that! It is seriously pleasurable driving past a spun car that you’ve been following. Even more so when they’ve been opening the gap!
