Race Report: Laguna Seca, July 3

Today was the first race of a three-race weekend with my old pals at Los Cerdos Voladores. I took a short final stint of about eighty minutes, exiting the pits tenth and finishing ninth of fifty-one cars, about 28 seconds adrift of eighth place. The race was marred for me by a metal-to-metal contact with the sixth-place car, which spent an hour behind me before passing under yellow and then losing control in front me twice. We banged fenders pretty hard in the last corner of the race and afterwards his entire team threatened to kick my ass, said threats being wound back when I stopped the car and got out to discuss it with them.

I’ll try to take a positive attitude to the track with me tomorrow…

Why do the losers and incompetents always have to act like that ? .

    Fuck em.

Everyone that matters knows within five laps who the ass-holes on track are…

    Nulli bastardi carborundum, Jack.

And I say that the willingness to step up and/or stop out and state their contested position clearly and with conviction, is showing a positive attitude. Maybe also “positively showing attitude” as well, but without attitude, you end up with a Fahrenheit 451 world, where individual points of view are discouraged, as being the source of conflict and contention.

Or, to put it more succinctly, Jack, “F*** ’em if they can’t take a joke.”

And in my book someone who fudges, no ignores, the rules of the rule book to slide by on a yellow flag, deserves to be DQ’d, and if the track officials lack the eyesight or the gonads to do their job, then said team should not be surprised if one of the people they have pissed off by violating the rule book should decide to drive hard into the gray zone between acceptable driving conduct and willfully malicious driving.

Social justice can take many different forms. Sounds like you had a positive attitude about bringing it in the social justice category, while winding up your driving stint.

I think I’d enjoy watching your style of racing. And I’d enjoy it even more if I could watch it from the passenger seat. (I am wicked fast at calculating all sorts of things, so maybe I could be a candidate for rally navigator for you? No harm in at least trying, though I’m sure that is a spot that is definitely over-subscribed.)

But pray tell, what is this thing with Los Cerdos Voladores? I understand El Español, and its reference, and I am surely going to google it, but I’d like to hear it explained from your POV.

And FWIW, although it is a rather tangential reference, there used to be a pretty damn good BBQ pit (at least for being so near the Mason-Dixon line) in Dover DE called “The Flying Pig”. Hush puppies were pretty damn good, too. Just don’t get caught in the miles and miles long speed trap that is the road that runs from Dover down to the Norfolk VA area in the Eastern Shore of MD. They will nail you for as little as they do in VA.

But the BBQ pit is even worth a detour, as is Bubba’s BBQ on the Outer Banks, two of them. Bubba used to cook special parties for the Redskins (damn, there goes that politically incorrect speech again), and is one of the best BBQ’s I’ve ever had.

Just had to segue into that BBQ soliliquy, riffing off the Flying Pig thing, as I have a hunch you might be a happy patron of the art of BBQ, and it is fun to reminisce about places I have been and things I have done. Hope you get to have your path cross theirs.

That’s the third spelling of ‘ don’t let the bastards wear you down ‘ in Latin I’ve heard , it must have been a very popular saying as all of them appear to be correct .

I believe “nulli bastardi carborundum” was the version attributed to Gen. McAulliffe of WW II fame. He was also the one who, when offered a chance to surrender, supposedly replied “Nuts!” although rumor has it that this was a bowdlerized version of his actual reply “Balls!”.

I am also familiar with what was an attempt to better “Latinize” the bastards expression: “non illegitimi carborundum” — obviously not pure pig Latin, but not your 8th grade teacher’s Latin, either.

I am not familiar with the third variant. Perhaps you’d complete the list, Nate.

    Thanx.

    Sure , why not ? .

    nic illegitimi carborundum

I have asked many people better educated than I about this , they all assure me there’s multiple ways to say many things in Latin .

Knowledge is useless unless shared .
