Meanwhile In Utah

It’s been a hectic four days, to put it mildly. Here’s what’s coming from the frankly epic trip that my brother and I took to Utah:

  • The story of how we rescued a Swiss tourist who got his Mustang stuck on the flooded Bonneville Salt Flats and helped him learn to love (strippers) again, told by “Bark M”, can be found at TTAC on Monday.
  • A full review of a brand-new, 15-miles-on-the-odometer Chevrolet Captiva LT, including a filmed run to the car’s 110mph limiter at Bonneville, will be written by my brother later on in the week for TTAC.
  • I’ll be writing up the Boss 302 Track Attack for R&T, to appear in an upcoming issue and online.
  • After that appears, my brother will be writing up his experience, and the experience of the other students at the school, for TTAC.
  • I’ll be detailing my experience around the full Miller course with Roger Miller and his NASA Time Trial Unlimited Lexus LF-A for TTAC.

There will be a variety of other outtakes on TTAC and other places in the months to come. We’re also talking to the folks at Miller to bring you some other stories and adventures in the future. As always, thanks for reading!

Ah! You broke the speed limit on the Flats. Your so hopelessly incorrigible.

My son did about 110mph on the Flats when he was twelve in our MPV van, I pushed it to and indicated 120+. That little van is a goer and gets around a corner pretty well, too.

My top speed, so far, on the Flats, is 198.6 in our 76′ Olds Starfire with a turbo charged Buick V-6 engine.

Probably not going to make the speed trials this year, due to some sailboat racing and visits from out of town friends which will conflict with Speed Week. This will be one of the few years I have missed going for the week.

Thursday and Friday nights at Wendover during Speed Week, are pretty special for gear heads/Hot Rodders with the arrival of all the cars and crews.

Anyone who has never attended Speed Week and who want to, should plan on being there Thursday or early Friday to capture the whole essence of Speed Week .

You will need to try and get a room a year plus in advance of the event or camp out at ‘Roads End’ or bring a camper or motor home. Rooms are tough to get during Speed Week. How tough(?). I have never managed one, but then I/we like the conviviality of the Roads End campers.

You should also join the SCTA-BNI for a good deal on Speed Week passes and gear.

“JOIN BEFORE SPEED WEEK AND YOUR MEMBERSHIP WILL INCLUDE: A BNI membership card,
Bonneville Nationals Speed Week entry pin, embroidered patch, Bonneville National Speed Week poster, SCTA Rules and Records book, Bonneville Nationals Speed Week
program, BNI decal and 4 issues of the Straightaway News. (These items will be shipped as they become available. Some items may ship separately.

Speed Week Aug. 8th to 16th…maybe?! If it doesn’t flood.
