Just an update on my supremely expensive and self-indulgent recherches du temps perdu. Took the Master Cruiser out last night. Was able to easily make a 14″ bunnyhop. That’s pretty lousy by my pre-middle-age standards, but given the fact that I’ve broken ten bones and been operated on three times since January of 2014, I’ll take it. Those of you who want some context for this can click on the jump and see the 32-year-old me doing the same thing.
This is from November of 2003. It was part of an instructional series I did on my old BMX website. Clearly we’ve come a long way in terms of video resolution since then… not to mention hair growth!

Time waits for no man.
Dude. You got a belt on with them shorts?
Oooooh I recognize that video very well, I think the quality is poor because I did Back-Play-Back-Play-Back-Play so many times hehehehehe.
You still in shape Jack 😉
Big hugh
Thank you amigo!
Always thought you had a bit of the Duke in ya.
Well played!
I like road bikes and mountain bikes, and I sort of even like fixed-gear bikes, though I don’t have one of those yet.
But I just don’t get the BMX thing. I especially don’t get the idea of middle-aged dudes on BMX bikes, but it’s a free country. I may have to try one sometime to see what I’m missing.
That can’t be you in the video, Jack. The bike does not appear to be lime green.
Trying to get a broken bone in before the end of the year?
Just because of the title!

This reminds me of when my son was 11 (and I 45) and I dusted off my skateboarding skillz to start taking him to skateparks. Fortunately, no photographic evidence exists of that summer.
In terms of your “listen to more music” new years resolution… Bon Iver’s 22, A Million is mind bogglingly good. Best album I’ve heard in the last decade. Seriously, that good.
I’m ahead of you brother! Already have it
That is fantastic. My dad had given up doing silly things once he got to his 40s and I always thought that was a shame. So far I haven’t quit. I think the kids appreciate it at least. Happy New Year and thanks for some good reads.
100% bunny approved.
I’m impressed with you clearing 14″ — and you should be as well. Now that I’ve entered my 50s, and am 4 years removed from my road bike spine fracture, and 17 years removed from splintering my right hip, I don’t think I’d clear six inches today. Those old injuries become arthritic, necrosis sets in, disc degeneration starts, and pain becomes a daily (and nightly) companion. As I now say, “If I knew I was going to live this long, or if I’d hurt this much, I would’a slowed down for the corners.”
What I tell myself is that nearly everybody is in pain when they are older. At least I’ll know the reason why I’m in pain 🙂
