No reason not to take a quick break from weightier matters to discuss something more pleasant. Chris Potter is part of Pat Metheny’s Unity Band. Imaginary Cities is a personal project of his. It’s recorded on ECM and if you are a fan of the label’s predisposition towards airy, abstract jazz recordings then you won’t be disappointed. It’s a great album to listen to when you’re trying to get some (mental) work done. More information here.

I like the concepts of mixing classical and jazz, your description is accurate, a while ago, you brought up Steely Dan and Aja, that is truly a timeless bit of music, that was iconic for the time it was produced.
I’m a philistine when it comes to jazz but it reminds me of Carla Bley’s Escalator Over The Hill:

Chris Potter is a marvelous player. His bouts with vertigo have left him occasionally unable to play, which is a tragedy. I spent an entire month transcribing his tenor battle with Craig Handy on Mingus Big Band’s “O.P.”
