Childhood Dreams Fulfilled, One Rustbucket At A Time

Video

This one’s for my teenaged self, the one who rode his bicycle twelve rather frightening round-trip miles to the Porsche+Audi shop just to look at a Silver Rose 944 Turbo S.

This coming November I’ll be racing a 944 Turbo in yet another low-buck event. The team is full of good people who understand the car and want it to perform competitively in what will be its debut race. I doubt we’ll have the pace or reliability to show near the top — these cars have a lot of bugs and it takes a lot of debugging to get them right — but the prospect of actually taking a green flag in one of my childhood dream cars is too powerful a lure to resist.

My experience as a 944 owner was more notable for unexpected expenses than for outright joy but as an arrive-and-driver I should be spared all the heartache. It will be like dating a difficult, tempestuous woman who is married to someone else. That’s a particular joy I’ve sworn off nowadays so this substitute will do nicely.

  1. Domestic Hearse

For lunch, the Crapcan Porsche 944 Turbo generally prefers its own timing belt. Although it has been known, occasionally, to snack on its own water pump.

  2. Mental

As a teen, I would stay up late watching A&E decades before “reality” programming ruined them, because they played badly taped sessions at The Comedy Store. When I would finally try to sleep, I would pop in a VHS and hit record so I could watch what I missed the next evening.

I remember that commercial, and would repeatedly back up the tape and watch it again and again. Also before it was cool to make classical versions of rock tunes, I racked my brain for an hour trying to place that tune (Not a musician) but thanks to you posting that lovely through back and the miracle of the iPhone, I can have it.

    I also LOVED this commercial.

    Good luck in the race.
