Some Of The Gear, All Of The Time

It’s a funny thing — you can spend as much on safety gear for a motorcycle as you can for the bike itself. Of course, having paid $400 for a Honda Rebel once, I already knew that.

And we still don’t have pants! That will be next, I suspect. Of course, now that he has all this stuff he didn’t even come close to crashing. We had a very amusing conversation on the way to the store to buy his helmet and whatnot:

“Daddy, one of the boys in another grade has a four-wheeler.”

“Oh, really? How did you find out?”

“He told me.”

“Just out of nowhere? He told you he had a four-wheeler?”

“Well…”

“Did you tell him you had a motorcycle?”

“I told some of my friends three times!”

Karts and motorcycles? This kid has opened Pandora’s Box, otherwise known as your bank account.

As I understand you’re between, ah, coverage systems, please tell me The Clone is fully insured. He’ll probably suffer no more than a sprain and a few scrapes, but I’m automatically programmed to worry about this kinda stuff. Cuz kids. And first-hand experience with more broken bones than a rodeo cowboy. Kinda like, well, this guy I read on the internet.

He’s been on his mother’s coverage since Day Zero, thankfully.

And I have coverage starting May 1, which I’ve named “Freeway Wheelie Day” in honor of the fact.

Looks like he needs boots, kneepads and pants, probably in that order. You will find the boots most frustrating, as they are expensive and he will grow out of them the day after you buy them. I took my daughter through a period of quad riding and racing maybe 15 years ago, and later on my son - who started on a garage sale PW 50 when he was 5, and who is now kicking my ass on Husqvarna.

Protective gear has come a long way, and I highly recommend it. In my early days before full-face helmets, I bolted a football face guard to the open face helmet I had, after I knocked my front teeth out.
