I’d like to think it keeps me sane. Most of my Foreverspin tops are safe at home, but this copper one sits at my office along with one of the diamond-like-carbon stainless-steel spin surfaces offered by the firm. I like to give it a solid spin then cue up a pop song and see whether the top will fall over before the song’s over. It doesn’t spin as well as it used to because my son let it fall onto a tile floor at his grandfather’s house. Ceramic tile will dent copper. Now you know.
Sometimes I feel like that top. A bit dented, a bit tarnished. Just spinning along as long as I can. Or like the man once said: “Hate it or love it, the underdog’s on top / And I’m gonna shine homie until my heart stop.” Something in that vein, anyway.
This was a big week for brother Bark and a rather contemplative one for me. Let’s see what we’ve got.
Bark’s occasionally star-crossed drive to a win in the first-ever SCCA Targa should have made for a great story — and it does. I’m not sure the old SCCA hands thought much of either Bark or the new NSX at the beginning of the event. Well, I wonder who’s crying now.
For TTAC, Bark offered some opinions on replacing an old soldier and the sausage-making new-car-review factory.
At R&T, I warned of an instructor shortage and waxed sentimental about my old Porsche.
As I’ve done a few times lately, I offered TTAC readers both a Trackday Diaries and a No Fixed Adobe.
Next week, I’ll be out of town for the fourth annual Road&Track Performance Car Of The Year testing. Fans of Bark need not worry; he’ll be there for the on-track portion as well!

Loved the old porsche article. I took the plunge 2 weeks ago on the 997.1 carerra s. Cocoa leather, silver, really a beautiful car. Drove 1200 miles from Florida to Texas with nary an issue. And, it’s already in the shop with a CEL.

I bought an Accord V6 sedan for my family because of reviews by Alex Dykes and Edmunds.com. Alex is an excellent reviewer. I found the Edmunds.com review useful because they did compare it to a Camry, an Altima, etc., listing some of the distinguishing features. Also, their laundry list of model features was useful because the car companies’ Web sites-where you’d expect to find that sort of thing-are often useless.
But, judging from the way they structure their Web site, no one actually reads their reviews anyway…
Didn’t finish the Saab piece. I own and DD a NG900, and the thing starts like clockwork every morning, including winter. But then, I was able to revive an Isuzu Impulse in a place where such thing was never officially imported, i.e. zero OEM parts/knowledge/whatevs. Insisting on the Isuzu thing, I bought an RS.
Normal family duties are covered by a trusty Commodore, which costs f-all to run.
Will eventually move into a 9-5 and one of those 9-3. Hopefully, and over the years, also grace my driveway with an E34, W124, RR Classic, XJ or ZJ, 77 T/A, C3 or C4 Corvette (although I probably won’t swap a Coyote V8 into the C3) and a V8 Soarer or Celsior. Not all at the same time…
That new Civic is hot stuff. Have from good source that they are selling like hotcakes locally. Same little birdie told me that they are also (finally) a good drive.
Why get a Celsior when you can get a JZX100 Chaser and make us US folks really envious?
Seen a couple of those locally, not my cup of tea. Same goes for R31 to R34 4 door Skylines. Not interested in making US people envious.
Great piece on the 993, though I had to snicker at the crossed fingers - a man with as many vintage vehicles as yourself should own a decent multimeter. Have you considered nicknaming it Ulysses? Though much is taken, much abides.
