I’m Not Dead, I’m Just Tired

What a fucking mess that was.

We’ll return to our regularly scheduled programming tomorrow with some random comments on the nature of love and relationships and differential welding.

1959 330F Replica $2399

photo 3

From my friend and partner Chris O’Dee at Melody Burner/Retro Guitars comes this brilliant-looking and fabulous-sounding replica of the 1959 330 F. Don’t confuse this with the modern 330 reissues; this is a different animal entirely and it would be just about perfect for anyone looking to capture the proper vintage sound of the originals.

Just Stop What You’re Doing And Watch This

For all I know, I’m the last person in the Western world to have seen this. But it’s…

beautiful.

There’s an Eldorado jumping out of a concrete pipe. A guy riding the top of a Sky Blue LTD wagon. A MAN KARATE FIGHTING A LEOPARD.

If only one movie survives the post-Affordable-Care-Act apocalypse, THIS MUST BE IT.

Light Of A Rainy Day

I’d planned to spend tonight writing and working, but my man Garrett stopped by to drink a bit and there was no way I was going to send him home. He’s currently in the middle of a six-year commitment to the Army that will see him leave for Somalia as an 11-Bravo (infantryman) early in 2014.

We started off by playing the stuff we always play — most notably, Coheed & Cambria’s “Welcome Home” — but then I broke out the Martin D-41 and the Korina Collection ASAT bass — and tried something else.

My Crystal Ball Broke A Long Time Ago, But…

A TTAC reader sent me this comment from 2009 where I’m babbling on about R107 560SLs and 450SLCs.

On This Harvest Moon, The Workings Of Memory

The harvest moon was last Thursday night, September 19th. I’m not a farmer and I don’t know how far you’d have to go back in my family history to find a farmer, so I did not note its passing.

I did, however, recently have a chance to talk to someone about the song which derives its name from the event, which led to me to consider the temporary nature of memory.

This Is The Season To Let The Real Gs In

towncar

Yes, that’s right. It’s been nearly two years since a part-time employee of mine cut a deer in half with my Town Car — but the damage is now fixed, courtesy of my friend Josh.

I want to take a moment (and a blog post) to recognize what Josh did for me, because it was fairly above-and-beyond and because it gave me yet another opportunity to understand character.

Blood On The Tracks

“Wait. Tell me something. What’s your favorite Dylan album?” Without hesitation,

“Blood On The Tracks.”

“Correct.”

Sign Your Name Across My Heart

Five long years ago, my friends and family built me a brand-new Neon racer from a shell in twenty days. The car went on to finish ahead of the mid-pack in its debut. It was the only car to finish fifth or better (out of 29) in both wet and dry qualifying races for the 2008 National Championships. A bad tire valve cost us the Championship race itself, where I expected we could contend for the podium. In the races at the end of the season, the Neon managed a few podiums and a Performance Touring overall victory. Had I not been disciplined for contact, I would have won the regional championship in the car. As it was, even with two race results stricken from the record, I was 2nd.

And then, so to speak, the wheels fell off.

Sons And Gullwings

So… I’ve been gone for a while. Part of it was that I got sick again. This pneumonia is proving tough to beat. But another part of it is that I was working with a friend at Nelson Ledges and then participating in the first-ever Road&Track Performance Car Of The Year. Please tweet that as #pcoty, thanks. It will make Alex Kierstein, our brilliant and fearless social-media guy, happy.

As part of this deal I had access to everything from a Ferrari F12berlinetta to a Fiesta ST at a racetrack and on some fast back roads. It was critical that we pick a winner from a very diverse group and that our impressions be both correct and comprehensive. I was down, totally willing to push the F12 to a stunning 138mph through a dicey Kink turn before smoking it down into a rough, narrow-apex hairpin. But as much as I wanted to do all that, I wanted to hang out with the boy for a little bit even more.
